OPVL Reflection #3

What did you learn by assessing the work of your peers?
I realized that there are so many different parts to pay attention to. I simply focused on stating what's happening in the source and what it's importance is, but I also need to focus on the historical context of the source and the so what aspect.

If you were to assign a 1-7 grade to yourself on your OPVL work, where do you think you are? Why?
I think I'm at a high 4 to mid 5-level range. Mr. Pierce commented that my ideas might be strong, but the communication isn't clear enough to reach a strong level.

What is your goal for the OPVL test?
My goal is to be at a 6/7 range. I think by improving my clarity and concision, I will get there by the test.

What steps will you take to go from where you are now to where you want to be?
I'm going to meet with Mr. Pierce and improve the writing's I've done so far. I'm also going to practice more OPVL writing, making sure I write each word with care and reason.

OPVL Reflection #2

From hearing others work, what do you feel you are doing well?
Something I feel that I am doing well, is being clear and concise when writing my sentences. I am noticing that I am sticking to what I am trying to say, and delivering it clearly.

How could you improve your OPVL?
I could improve my OPVL by checking to see if my claims and reasoning are correct and strong. Before revising, what I had written might have been clear, but it was very weak and not supported well.

How are you feeling about your OPVL skills? What questions do you need answered?
Overall, I'm feeling so-so. I think I got the writing ok and I understand the format well, but I now need to pay closer attention the source and I need to analyse it to the best of my abilities. I also need to pay attention to which reasons are in relation to the origin and which are in relation to the purpose. I confused those before, and that's something I might need to clarify for myself over the course of this week and next week.

First OPVL Reflection

How was that process for you?
I think the process of writing an OPVL is really clear. I was able to follow along easily when we were writing it and I never really felt lost.

In what ways do you feel successful and comfortable with OPVL?
I felt that during our practice I was able to participate and think about the questions critically, which helped me analyse the sources better.

What else do you need to know in order to be successful doing OPVLs?
I need to know how to state my ideas, especially the important ones, as clearly and concisely as possible. When we were writing, I felt like I always wanted to say more, even though the full-stop was already typed.

How will you seek help to find a solution to what you need to know?
Practice, practice, practice. Also, planning out what I'm going to say by physically organising and writing down my ideas. When I was writing my CEA summative paragraphs, a small outline helped me a lot with this.

Unit 2 Wrap-Up

1) Where did you excel? What do you fell good about in terms of your habit as a learner?
Throughout this unit, I think I demonstrated being a critical thinker well. Each time we learned new content, I tried my best to connect and to analyse what each of the information meant so that I could build upon my learning.

2) In what areas would you like to improve your habits as a learner?
I think that I could improve my risk-taking skills more. I had many questions, but I didn't ask many of them. I know that if I had done so, I would have understood everything even better.

3) What are your goals between now & the end of the semester?
Social Studies: Do what you can to improve your learning. Basically asking more questions and reaching out for help would help a lot.
Overall: Choose your priorities. I do many activities, and I have many ambitions, but to get to those, I need to reflect on what I want to do and what's important to me. Especially in high school, I can't have all my days filled with activities when I have homework and studying to do as well.

Update #3: Queen Elizabeth and CEA's

What did you learn by examining the work of your peers?
I noticed that many of the mistakes the students were making, I was making as well. For example, less is more. I have a tendency to write a lot, as I'm never sure if what I write is clear or enough to get my message across. One of the paragraphs we looked at had the same problem. They wrote a lot, and as a reader, it was unclear and too confusing. So, I learnt that I should pay attention to this, and think about what I'm going to write before I do it, so that I can form clear and concise sentences.

Has your thinking changed regarding how to write a CEA?
I've realized that CEA's aren't just three parts. There are many different components to writing a good paragraph, and to step up my game, I need to incorporate those parts (transitions, clarity, conciseness) in an effective manner.

What adjustments can you/will you make to your own work?
I will definitely think before I write, and when I write, I'm going to take my time to be able to create a strong piece. Patience and thinking will lead to precision, clarity and conciseness, which will lead to a good CEA paragraph. I'm going to be keeping the different components in mind, so that I can make my work to the best that it could be.

Where am I now? Social Studies Update #2

1. Where am I now?
I think I'm currently on step 3.  I might be hitting the borders of step 4, but I don't feel fully confident yet with that last part.

2. Where am I going?
I am going to step 4, which is me discovering the big picture and defining that in words. I'm going to be understanding the depth of the events that happened in history, and how important it was in our history. Finally, I am going to be using the historical concepts with each paragraph I write, and I'm going to use it as a tool that will direct my thinking and writing.

3. How can I fill the gaps? What do I need to do to move up the stop ladder?
I'm going to focus on asking myself questions (How? Why? So what? etc) while writing, checking to make sure I've answered all of them to the best of my abilities.

Reflection on Reformation

How do you feel about your first learning target and your ability to analyse?

At the moment, I feel mostly comfortable with all the information that I learned so far about the Protestant information. The only thing that I need some more clarification on, is the rebellion part and how the King got more power. Basically, the part that came after Martin Luther's thesis and his rise to fame.
Regarding analysis, I think that I'm starting to get there. I know how to do it, but I feel like I need more practice. For me, that's probably one of the main things that I need: practice and some kind of feedback or evaluation on those practices. That way I can know how I'm doing as well.

Being Balanced: A question with an answer.

Recently in Advisory, I have been working on a project to answer the question: "What issue personally affects your world the most profoundly right now?". Each 8th grade student was given the opportunity to respond to this question and to do something about it.

My issue: Being Balanced
My advisor: Ms. Macek
My Group: Ava Hillman, Lucas Marangoni, Rosanne van Ballegooijen

Describe your initial reactions to this project. What did you think?
My first reaction to this project was confusion as to what the purpose was for this and what our first activities were leading to. In the first advisory session we had on this project, we were brainstorming the issues that affected us daily. After a few more sessions, as the project became clearer and clearer, my confusion was turning into interest on how I could actually do something for the community.

Did you complete a project?
I was luckily able to complete a project. I was part of a small group of three students (including myself) that had a meeting with the directors of the Middle School to discuss a new schedule arrangement that would focus on reducing stress and increasing efficiency in our Middle School.

Our schedule:

Our Prezi for the directors during the meeting:

How hard was it for you to decide upon a project? What motivated you?
Deciding on the issue wasn't that hard for me. I knew from previous reflections that lack of balance is something that is really present in my life. As a result, now that I had this opportunity to do something about it, I took it. My group and I at first were unsure of how we could tackle this problem, as there are many different factors involved, many of which are ones we cannot control. The schedule was something that popped into our heads, and as none of us had any ideas that were better than this, we went with it and tried to improve it.

Was the process effective for you? (Time, space, guidance/support, team, etc.)
For me, the process was not that effective. The atmosphere in which I was working on this project wasn't really motivating, as many other groups in my advisory were not going to do anything. Also, I think that more structure in the beginning would have been helpful, as my group and I wasted 2-3 advisories doing things (researching information that didn't fit with our topic) that were in the end never useful to us. Time and organisational wise, I think that if my group and I had had a little more time to process everything and prepare, we would have been even more ready for our meeting than we ended up being.

What was the most rewarding part of this project for you?
The most rewarding part of this project for me was going to the meeting and presenting our ideas. It was the final part of our project, and that is really what we were working towards the whole time.

What was the most difficult part of this project for you?
The most difficult part of this project for me was being organised. In the beginning we had a thought out plan, but in the end, with things such as long weekend and Little 8, we lost some time and organisation. At one point, I completed parts of our presentation at home, as I knew that we would not have time to do that at school and such.

What would you change about the process?
A part of this process that I would change, is time. As I had mentioned before, if we'd had had more time to work on this, then we would have been more prepared and organised and ready to go into the meeting.

What would you tell a future 8th grader about this project?
People always tell you that one person can make a difference. But that person can only make a difference if they actually take action. In this project, you have the opportunity to take action, so take advantage of it and make use of the things that you could achieve from it.

Do you recommend 8th grade advisors attempt something like this project again? (Was it worth it?)
I would recommend advisors to do something like this again, but change it by making it more effective. For example, advisors could give examples of things we could do, tell us what the point is of this project from the start, and structure the beginning of the project more.

Um Third Culture Kid? Eu?

An 8th Grade Animal Farm Reflection

Recently in Humanities, we had a debate, where we were acting as a character from the novel Animal Farm. It was a really interesting experience, and I learnt many things when reading the book and when putting myself into on of the characters' shoes and debating from their perspective.

The novel.

Which character did you identify with most in Animal Farm and why?
I think I identify the most with Clover. She is a hard-working character, and has her own opinions on things, and I think that I have these same characteristics. The only difference between us, is that I voice my opinions much more, and she keeps herself a bit more silenced. Also, throughout the book, when we got to her thoughts were described to us, I agreed pretty much 100% of the time.

In the novel, what was the most memorable moment or quotation?
For me, the ending definitely struck me the most. The last paragraph reads: "Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which" (Orwell, 54).  I find this the most powerful and most memorable because it really fits with the themes of the book, and it also tells the reader the life we're living. It's comparing human greed to animals, so that it becomes clear to the reader that this is how our world is. It might not be a happy ending, but it is still a truthful and loyal-to-the-book ending.

In what ways did reading Animal Farm help your understanding of the Russian Revolution?
I definitely understood more about the feelings and thoughts that could have gone through different groups of people's minds, and I the fog cleared more when it came to the emotional and psychological effect Lenin, Stalin and Napoleon had on the society they were dictating over.  Without the book, I realised that things such as the Red Terror Campaign were really bad for Russia's people, but if I had not read Animal Farm, I wouldn't have been able to had an emotional connection with the families who had people executed or the bystanders who watched in fear.

Describe your experience reading Animal Farm. Was the novel engaging? How did you feel about the author's style of writing? Would you recommend the book to another reader?
I really enjoyed reading Animal Farm. It was a different type of book to the ones I've been reading recently, and it was really interesting. Orwell described the story in comparison to the Russian Revolution really well. Also, the characters and the descriptions really enhanced my reading. The way that the author wrote the book helped me to become more engaged and hooked to the story, because even though I already knew the plot a little due to the Russian Revolution, I still wanted to read on and on, hoping that the characters received a happier ending. Even though they did not, I would still recommend this book to others because it is really powerful. Although I know that everybody reads it in a different way, the themes and messages in the novel are so powerful and imprinting in a persons mind, that they will not forget Animal Farm that easily.
Describe your personal approach to annotation, paying attention to successes and challenges. What techniques helped with your understanding of the text?
When we had guiding questions to pay attention to when annotating, I was able to pick up the most important things out of a chapter. Since teachers have read and analysed this book very carefully, it's helpful when they point out to us students what to look out for, so that we can understand things better and be able to make connections and have deep thoughts throughout the book.

Why did Orwell write Animal Farm? Do you think this thematic message is relevant to today? Explain.
I think that Orwell wrote Animal Farm to not only clarify the Russian Revolution to those who didn't understand it, but to also clarify how polluted our world is. The message about tyranny that he is sending is very clear, and is easily connectable to many major historical events in our world history, but also in a local, modern society. For example, when Napoleon gives himself many privileges and doesn't give these to the people, I think that it is relatable to corruption now-a-days. It isn't as violent or extreme as in the book, but it is still there.

The debate.

Describe your experience during the Animal Far election. What were some personal challenges and successes?
This debate in Humanities was a little different than the debates I had done before. A challenge I faced here was remaining calm when responding to people's statements or questions. If I couldn't think of anything to respond immediately I had to make sure that the other person didn't see my nervousness. This is something that I hadn't had a lot of practice with during class, so I had to figure it out by myself.

What formative experiences helped you prepare best for the summative election (annotations, class discussions, socratic seminar, character char, literary analysis paragraph, research, small group discussions, peer revision, peer practice, etc.)?
For the speech, all our formative writing tasks helped. Since last semester, I've learnt many new writing techniques, such as the use of clap-traps, that vastly helped in the writing of my speech.

What is one moment you will always remember from the election?
I think the thing that I will most remember from the election, is when everyone was laughing and smiling. It isn't exactly one moment, but it happened many times and it was something great either way. It is so noticeable how much our classmates and I have become closer and more comfortable with each other over the course of the school year.

What did you learn about persuasion?
You can only persuade somebody if you said what you want right. Even if you had good ideas, it is the way you say it that actually persuades the person. At least, that is what I have noticed. If you talk in a very enthusiastic way but have nothing important to say, you'll have more followers than if you talk in a monotone way and have great ideas.

In what ways did preparing for the summative election give you a better understanding of the novel Animal Farm and/or the Russian Revolution? Did any of your thinking about human nature or political systems change?
When I was preparing for the election, I had to put myself in my characters shoes, and that made me realise more the strengths and weaknesses that each character had. I was able to connect this to the Russian Revolution by understanding the roles that each figure or group of people represented.
I'm thinking that George Orwell partly wrote this book to show people that the majority of things doen't have a happy ending. He didn't change my thinking about human nature, he just clarified it and made sure I knew it better.

Is there anything you would have done differently if you had the chance to time travel and start this unit or assessment again? Would you change anything about the assessment? What advice would you give for students next year?
Something I would do differently, is not take the assignment so seriously. I noticed that when I was preparing for it, that I was too tense about the formality of it. When I saw the other videos, I realised that I could have relaxed a bit more and that I could have added more humour to my video.

The First Months of 2016 at School

This quarter, I've learnt and experienced many things. In three sections (growth, challenges, and success) I'm going to sum up some key points in my academic semester so far.

A clear success was in Humanities. My writing has been at a constant rate of success. In the beginning of the semester, I challenged myself a lot to meet the expectations of my teacher. That paid off, as now I can write a paper faster, and pretty well.

Example Humanities paragraph:
Prompt: Did Communist leaders use violence to achieve equality for the peasants/working class or to establish their own personal power?

Vladimir Lenin, the first Russian communist leader, decided that the only realistic way to attain equality in Russia was to use violence, however it was more often used to establish his own personal power than for fairness. According to a document called “Communism in Russia”, it is described that Lenin and his fellow communists began the Red Terror campaign, who executed over 200,000 people, because they opposed the new government. This demonstrates that communists were fearful of the anti-communists, therefore going to great lengths to keep up their power. Also, one third of the Bolshevik party was expelled for disagreeing with Lenin about the NEP in 1921. This proves that even Lenin’s co-workers were forced out of his government for opposing him and his ideas. In the end, the impression is given the only approach the communists took to maintain their power, was violence, and that this was to ensure that there was no competition or opposition threatening their rule.

An obvious growth that I have had, was in my Portuguese class. We've had to write many blog posts and dialogues that have improved my writing and speaking skills. I used to mix up the different verb tenses a lot, but now I'm improving and noticing that people are understanding what I'm saying. Through assignments that my teacher assigned me, such as summative blogposts, I can honestly say that I've gotten much better. A core value that I demonstrated, was perseverance and risk-taker. First learning the language was really hard, but I had to really push myself and now I can pick it up easier.

Blog Post example:

O artigo do BBC BRASIL.

A speech that I presented to my class.

A challenge that I've faced, was in BRSS. Even though I have vastly improved my Portuguese speaking and writing skills, it is still a challenge to be in this class. Being surrounded by native Portuguese speakers, it is hard to follow along. They talk really fast, and the information is difficult to comprehend sometimes. Nevertheless, I am persevering. I've started to take notes more often and just asking my peers for help, as they can translate it to me and summarise what the teacher said. A core value that I am demonstrating in this class, is critical thinker. I need to think about the words and information that I'm hearing, because I might understand things in a way that I shouldn't, and without thinking about what I'm hearing, I won't ever learn from it.

The class in which I demonstrated how the learning habits impacted me as a learner, was math. Some units in math were a little challenging for me, and that is when I demonstrated the learning habit Perseverance/Risk-Taker. I had to push myself to understand things, and I took risks when solving a problem even if I wasn't completely sure. I demonstrated inclusivity in my class because the class is mostly made up of students I didn't really talk to before I actually worked with them in class. Now, I know everybody and don't mind at all who I'm working with. Responsibility was obvious this quarter when I completed all my assignments and made sure that I was up-to-date with my learning. Lastly, I represented the learning habit 'curious', when I did extra problems and tried new methods to try to solve some problems. Even if the methods didn't work, it was a learning experience either way.

Ampliando a coscientização.

Reflecting on the Russian Revolution

How do you learn history, economics, politics, and geography (social studies) best? Did this unit provide those methods? Some examples: read textbooks, read primary documents, answer questions, discuss, debate, complete hands-on activities, participate in simulations, create dramatic performances, watch videos, listen to stories, create or analyse art . . .

After this unit, I've learned a lot more about how I learn and how I understand material. One of the things I've seen is that by reading modern documents that contain an in-depth explanation about the topic, I'll be able to make clear sense of the topic. Also, I prefer to have everything in one document. Having multiple pieces of paper and a variety of sources is good, however I see that I work better if it's all organised and easy to access/find. Another thing I've noticed about myself is that I like to learn through simulations or through performances. When I act, my mind transforms into the person or the character, and I can see and understand the process or event from their point of view. When we were doing the power simulation, I felt a little annoyed and competitive when my power is decreasing or increasing. After the simulation, I understood more how the process had worked and I could see the power of the actions of the competing leaders at the time.

What important lessons or ideas will you remember from this unit, and could those lessons/ideas help you in the future?
An important lesson that I learned in this unit, is that nobody believes in the same values as I do. Ideas can be similar, but in the end, everybody thinks and acts differently. From that, I learned that I have to always be open-minded to different ideas and I have to be prepared that people are going to disagree with me and have a valid reason to. This lesson is very important for in the future, as in the world there are so many more cultures and religions and ethnicities that all have different values and norms.

Who decided what you will remember from this unit? How did you decide what was important?
I decide what I will remember from this unit, even if other people want me to remember specific aspect of the unit, I will be the one that is going to remember. I'm most likely going to remember the main ideas of the forms of an economy, as I predict that I'm going to be talking about economies in the near future, and I'm going to remember the big actions that the Russian leaders took, as I can learn from them and I also feel like their choices dictated how the Russian Revolution went.
An example of your choice of HIPP (new or from our unit), or an application you could use it for outside of this unit.

A political cartoon and your application of analysis, or your thoughts about analysing political cartoons, or a reason why political cartoons are used.

Why do we continue to use DBQ in our course, or a critique of DBQ, or how does DBQ work for you as a learner?
The DBQ paragraphs have helped improve my writing a lot, and over the course of the school year, it is also become very noticeable. Before Mr. Hillman introduced this form of academic writing, I wrote really long, repetitive paragraphs and I had trouble writing in clear and concise sentences. The DBQ format has helped me to structure my writing and it has helped me to stay on topic and make sure that everything all fits together.
A picture, emoji, drawing, or symbol that sums up for you an important element of this unit, with a caption explaining your choice.

I think that this image of a plant growing shows the evolution and progress of things. Evolution was seen when Lenin and Stalin rose to power; how they evolved as leaders. The Russian Revolution itself was an evolution of a country, as it became another step closer to the country it was in the 1990s. I also think that for me personally this plant growing demonstrates my learning, as my knowledge of economics and politics in real life increased immensely. I used to be very confused about these complicated subjects, but completing this unit, I can honestly say that I understand this a lot more, and I also have an in-depth understanding, not just basics.

Teen Changes Reflection

What do you think are the most intense emotional, social, or physical challenges for Grade 8 teens? Explain why.
I think that one of the most intense emotional/social changes for my age group right now, is the pressure that intensifies. There are many different types of pressure, and I think that the following three are the most intense in Grade 8 or higher.

1. The pressure to do well in school is increasing a lot, because we all are getting to that point where our futures are starting to matter just a tiny bit more.

2. The pressure to look or act a certain way is growing, because kids our age are more open to social media and other factors that could influence their opinions about things.

3. Peer pressure is also occurring a little more; if our friends our in a relationship, it would be cooler for us to be in a relationship as well.

How can we deal with this type of pressure or expectations?
I think that one of the ways to deel with pressure, is to make sure you're balanced in your time, so that I have enough time to do homework and study. Also, I think it's important to be able to say "no", because if you don't want to do something, you shouldn't be forced to do it. Lastly, I think that it's important to tell yourself that you are beautiful the way you are, and that you don't need to fall for the pressure to be a certain way, because the world wouldn't be interesting if everybody was the exact same.

Character Scenario

To answer the questions for our health homework, I chose scenario #4.

1) What are some potential physical signs that Cassia may be developing an eating disorder?
Some potential physical changes could be that at first she seemed normal and healthy, however then her weight started dropping.

2) What emotional/mental/behavioral signs that Cassia may be developing an eating disorder?
Some emotional/mental signs are that Cassia seemed depressed, and less social. She also said she feels lonely and she is unhappy with her physical appearance. Another factor is that she is stressed and worried for her transition to grade 9.

Some behavioral signs that Cassie demonstrated, is that she could eat double or triple the food than her friends. Cassia frequently talks about how she dislikes parts of her body, and how she wishes they were different and that she were skinnier. Also, at the beach house, her friends noticed that she left for about 15 minutes after every meal, and that when she returned, there were remains of vomit in the toilet.

3) What are some external (life changing) factors that may be influencing the risk of Cassia developing an eating disorder?
Cassia told her friends that her family is going through some tough changes. Her parents are divorcing and they might be moving away. She is also being bullied by her friends about her lack of athletic abilities and her choice of clothing. Cassia is also moving on to high-school, and that is stressing her out as well.

4) What eating disorder do you think she may be developing?
I predict that Cassia has bulimia, since she is eating a lot, and then leaving for a few minutes, in which she is probably throwing up her food.

5) What other signs of an eating disorder (not mentioned in the story) could you look out for?
Some other signs that we could look out for are swelling in the cheeks/jaw, and stained teeth. A person could be overexercising, or acting overly fearful of fat/weight gain.

6) Now you finish the story! Write a 2-4 sentence ending about how Cassia can get help for her current situation. What advice does she need?
Cassia's mom hires a therapist to talk to Cassia, and after some discussions, Cassia feels better about her family situation. Following some advice her therapist gave her, Cassia decides to talk to her friends about the way their bullying is making her feel. Her friends didn't think that it had impacted her so much, and stop. Over the course of time, Cassia stops throwing up and gets a healthy weight, and she also feels a lot more confident and becomes happy with her body image.

Here is the scenario:
Cassia’s friends are worried about her. She seems depressed and she doesn’t want to go to the mall, or hang out with them as much anymore. Linda one day talked to Cassia about her concerns. Cassia says her family is going through some tough changes. Her parents are divorcing and they may be moving countries. Linda has noticed, that when she has lunch with Cassia, Cassia seems to eat lots of food at lunch, or sometimes she can eat double or triple more food than the other around her are eating. Cassia seems to be of normal weight, although lately, she has been losing some weight and she often complains about how she wants to lose more weight. Sometimes Cassia talks a lot about how she doesn't like her thighs or stomach. Cassia will often tell her friends, that she wished she looked totally different.
Last weekend, all of the girls went to stay at Cassia’s beach house for her birthday party. They had a fun time, but two of her friends noticed that after each meal over the two days, Cassia left the table and then would return 15 minutes later. Later, her mom found that the toilet had some remnants of vomit in it. When her mom asked Cassia, what was wrong, she just said, she might have eaten something bad at the birthday party and she just had an upset stomach. Her mother is very confused, she saw Cassia eating lots of food at the party and no one else had complained about any bad food.  When her mother tried to talk to her again, Cassia suddenly became angry and started to cry... she said she really felt lonely, that some of the friends at the birthday party, would sometimes make fun of her, especially about the way she dresses and because she isn't as athletic as they are.  Sometimes, some of these friends will embarrass her in front of other people. Cassia tells her mother that she sometimes feels very lonely and that she hates the way she looks. Cassia also tells her that she is really worried and stressed about going from Grade 8 until Grade 9. Cassia's mother is very worried about all of this.

Faculdades Mais Influentes

 O artigo do

S.M.A.R.T Goals

Goal Statement: I will spend more time riding my bike to improve my endurance and speed. I can record the dates that I biked, my speed, distance, and heart rate on a piece of paper each time I bike. I can also plan ahead to make sure I don't skip days. At the end of each month, I can reflect on my data, and based on the information, set a new distance/speed/time goal to keep on improving my skills.
